Reflection Paragraph

The most important facts that I learned where that Law Enforcement officers are always on the look out making sure that their community is safe and that everyone is following the law. The most surprising to me was that Law Enforcement officers get are intitled to a lot of benefits or good benefits when they retire. I'm not sure that I have any questions left to ask, but if I did I would ask what does it mean to someone to work in Law Enforcement? Another question that I would ask would be what are some everyday activities that obtain to Law Enforcement? My feelings towards my topic now would be that I am excited to have my Senior Project on time and that it reminds me that I am nearing closer to graduation day by day.

Question # 8

Police help their community to help prevent crime and address social order problems. Throughout the world today, communities are becoming involved with their police partners. There are a numerous community problems that the community police are looking out for and are correcting. The safety issues involve vandalism and break-ins. There is also youth gangs and violence and children's safety. During or being in a nuisance activity is being very noisy people or vehicles. In the neighborhood appearance there is a issue with graffiti, littering, or unkept buildings. Also there are traffic problems like speeding or wreck less driving or improper parking. Police or Law Enforcement help everyone. They help our youth by communicating with them or by listening to their problems or being involved in solutions. They help our elderly by listening and helping to their needs. For our Business Community they are involved in community problems. Also for people who are in need by addressing their issues (" www.rgpf").

Question # 7

While police officers are only required to work a  fourty-hour week, police tend to work overtime. They often work nights and weekends, as shifts are necessary in order to maintain twenty-four hour protection. During large investigations, police officers are usually required to work longer hours. At all times, whether on or off duty, they are expected to be armed and ready to state academy where training will include classroom instruction and experience areas such as firearms, self-defense, traffic control, and emergency response. Continuing education and training helps officers and detectives perform better at their jobs, and both are essential to job promotion. Higher salaries are almost always awarded to those with higher degrees. Police officers can be elected into supervisor roles as sheriff and deputy's. Positions requiring similar skill sets as police officers include investigators, correctional officers, security guard, and surveillance officers (" www.salary.com"). These are all ways for movement and advancement in the work force of Law Enforcement.

Question # 6

There are four basic ways to get rewarded in Law Enforcement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupation Employment Statistics show the annual wage for Law Enforcement. Their is also the supplemental pay. Shift differential pay for time worked on nights and weekends. Longevity pay based on years of service. Their is also uniform allowances. The benefits in addition above average salaries, the benefits have retirement packages. The insurance coverage options that usually exceed by private employers. If you start early, you can retire in your forties and start a new career while still  drawing from the police pension. Question # 5

Law Enforcement programs vary depending on what specific career you are interested in pursuing. Typically, the more education you have, the greater your chance of moving up the ranks in the career of Law Enforcement. For many Law Enforcement positions, a high school diploma or GED and completion of a training program are all that is required (" www.ccu.edu"). Law Enforcement officers should have good verbal and written communication skills. Police officers need to be able to communicate effectively with people in a variety of situations. Officers are required to write detailed reports of the incidents and the investigations in which they are involved in. Law Enforcement officers should also have good computer skills. With rapid advances in technology, police officers should be comfortable using a computer and any technology that support them in their job. Psychology and sociology are two important sciences that will help Law Enforcement officers better understand both individual and group behavior (" LawEnforcementCareersTips.com").

Question # 4

Most Law Enfourcement agents are paid according to the General Schedule which is the governtment pay scale. The GS scale has fifteen grades. Each grade has ten steeps. Most agents start off as GS-5 step 1 or as a GS-7 Step 1 depending on your education or experience. After successfully completing one year on the job, agents are automatically promoted to the next GS level, Step1. The general progression with one year increments are GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, GS12. These levels are promoted and can also be very competitive. After completeing level GS-12 successfully an agent automatically becomes a GS-13. Most agencies consider this competitive promotion. The officer may reciece a step increase if he does not recieve a grade increase for that year. Steps 1-5 are recieced after completing three years at the lower grade. The government pays its agents a locality pay. The government pays the officer the locality pay to those who work in larger cities("PoliceJobsInfo.com"). Typical earning for a police officer range between 50,000 to 100,000 dollars (www.ehow.com)

Question # 3

There are basic steps to follow on how to know what school to choose and what kind of training would be needed for the Law Enforcement agency. First you must decided what type of job you would want with Law Enforcement. The next step is you need to know if their are any limitations on how or where you are going to be working. You will then need to learn about the agency you are choosing. It would be best to then talk with a agency personnel to get a better idea of what the job consists of ( "Planning your Law Enforcement job search"). There are academy's that recommend academy physical training course. If that course is past then most higher ranked academies look and search for officers that can pass the uphill challenge. You mainly will most likely get hired for a job around the ages of 20 - 29. Men must be able to bench press 99 percent of body weight, do 38 sit-ups per minute, and 29 push-ups per minute (" Police Jobs Info ").

Question # 2

In the daily life of a police officer there are many things that a police officer needs to be successful in the line of duty. Police officers must be in good health, be very physically fit, and have excellent hearing and vision. They must not have a criminal record. Everyone who applies to be a police officer   is investigated for any illegal activity. There is also observation skills. The officers that patrol are given tiny details to detect the neighborhood they are patrolling. Officers must have good judgement because they have to make decisions everyday. One of the most important deciding factors is the use of firearms. They must also decide how to deal with angry or dangerous people and wether to handle situations alone or request backup. A really important factor is to have good judgement under stress, because it is very important. During the main part of the day police officers come in contact with all kinds of people. There may be witnesses, suspects, along with different backgrounds and cultures. Police officers face a lot of stress in their jobs. Many agencies deal with high levels of stress ( " Working in Law Enforcement pg. 21- 22"). (" Planning your Law Enforcement job search").

Question # 1

The three main types of Law Enforcement are arrest, trial, and imprisonment. In the action of arrest the police arrest any one who they believe committed a crime. The person who is being arrested will have a warrant for their arrest. Others will had to have violated the law for their arrest. Trial is held in court after given a attorney. The judge appoints a defense attorney to handle the person's case if they can't afford one. The judge then sets bail if he or she should go on trial. Imprisonment is the longest or shortest term to which an offender may be sentenced. The judge often decides the length of the sentence. Depending on how he or she feels will best serve both the offender and society. (" On pages
141 and 142 this first question is given in the World Book"). My quote backs up my answers and what was given to me in the text. (" GoLawEnforcement.com").

What I want to know about my topic

As I begin my search, I have many questions, and I'm sure more will develop during this process. ( I have found that the more I learn about most subjects, the more questions and fewer answers I have!) Right now, my overarching essential question is " what do we know about Law Enforcement?" To find answers to this broad inquiry, I will look for answers to more specific questions, such as

  1. What are the three main types of Law Enforcement?
  2. What are some skills needed to be successful?
  3. What school and training are required of this particular career?
  4. What is the yearly salary?
  5. What type of education would you need to go in to this career?
  6. What are the rewards for Law Enforcement?
  7. Does Law Enforcement provide ways of advancement?
  8. What are ways of Law Enforcement helps the community?

The story behind my topic choice

The main reason that I am going to research Law Enforcement is because I am interested in learning more about the law, practicing and serving others, to meet new people, and to build confident relationships. In the work field of Law Enforcement, you have to be on your toes and ready for the calls or emergencies. The skills you need are knowing the law up and down, serve or help others. You need to be in good health and be able to deal with tough situations. As being part of Law Enforcement, you should always be ready to help your community and to keep everyone safe and to make sure everyone follows right from wrong.
